Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) can be used as a tool for imaging where specific molecules are located on surfaces.
Successful applications range from the analysis of the distribution of pesticides on slices of fruits and vegetables, to the distribution analysis of finish materials on high-performance synthetic fibers or illegal drugs on hair. Mass spectrometry imaging under ambient conditions is a very recent development and has already a wide range of applications, especially in qualitative surface analysis.
