Praxa Sense establishes presence at Noviotech Campus and scales up sensor technology for wearables

Praxa Sense has secured funding from Oost NL and an angel investor to further develop its sensor technology and bring it to market. The sensor and chip technology company is establishing a presence at Noviotech Campus in Nijmegen, where it is scaling up ALIS®, a new generation of sensors for applications including wearables and medical technology. Oost NL is investing in the company through the Innovation and Energy Fund Gelderland.

Praxa Sense’s solution addresses a key challenge in the wearables market, including smartwatches: gathering more reliable health information under a wide range of conditions. Existing optical sensors are sensitive to interference, for example from movement, and provide only a limited picture of a person’s health.

In addition to blood volume, ALIS® measures blood flow velocity, providing richer insights for the development of advanced health measurements. The technology also opens up opportunities for measurements at locations on the body where reliable monitoring is currently more challenging. This creates new opportunities for the next generation of wearables and monitoring devices.

Praxa Sense is also exploring whether its technology can enable continuous and reliable blood pressure monitoring with a wearable – something the current generation of wearables does not yet offer.

Technology supplier for partners’ products

Praxa Sense does not bring end products to market itself. Instead, it develops and supplies the technology that enables partners and customers to create their own applications. This positions the company as a technology supplier within the international value chain for sensor technology and monitoring.

Praxa Sense’s sensors have been validated at laboratory scale and are now being developed further towards industrial production. The company targets both medical and non-medical applications. Medical applications generally require a more extensive validation process.

Leonard Moonen, co-founder of Praxa Sense: “The market does not necessarily need more monitoring devices; it needs better sensors. With ALIS®, we aim to deliver the data quality and additional insights required for reliable monitoring, including in conditions where existing sensors fall short. This funding helps us take the next step towards market introduction and further scale-up.”

Establishing a presence at Noviotech Campus

By establishing a presence at Noviotech Campus, Praxa Sense is joining an environment where health, high-tech and chip technology come together. The campus provides access to companies, knowledge institutions and facilities that support the company’s further development and scale-up. In time, Praxa Sense aims to expand into The Frontrunner, the campus’s new central building offering office and laboratory space for innovative companies.

Praxa Sense emerged from the YES!Delft startup ecosystem and will also maintain a presence in South Holland.

Connecting with strong ecosystems

For Oost NL, Praxa Sense builds on the strength and expertise of East Netherlands in health, high-tech and chip technology. The investment comes from the Innovation and Energy Fund Gelderland, a fund established by the Province of Gelderland and managed by Oost NL.

Bart van ’t Ende, Investment Manager Tech at Oost NL: “Praxa Sense is a strong fit with the medical technology ecosystem in East Netherlands. The company combines in-depth sensor expertise with a scalable business model and applications across multiple markets. Its presence at Noviotech Campus also strengthens its connections with partners, knowledge and talent across the region.”
