Milence accelerates electric road freight from East Netherlands

The transition to electric road freight takes more than electric trucks. A reliable European charging network is just as important. That is why Milence is developing public charging hubs for electric trucks along key European transport corridors. East Netherlands plays a clear role in this transition. From Arnhem, Milence develops and tests charging technology, while its charging hub in Zwolle supports electric road freight along international routes.

European ambition, technical base in Arnhem

Milence was founded in 2022 as a joint venture between Daimler Truck, TRATON GROUP and Volvo Group. Its mission: to enable fossil-free heavy-duty road transport. The Netherlands has played an important role in these plans from the outset. Its central location and strong logistics sector make the country a natural base for international transport flows.

Milence established its corporate headquarters in Amsterdam and chose Arnhem as the location for its technical headquarters. Since 2024, the company has operated from Cleantech Park Arnhem. Here, Milence has a technical lab where it tests and develops new charging technologies. Arnhem provides access to valuable expertise in energy infrastructure, electrification and smart charging solutions.

For Milence, East Netherlands is much more than a business location. The region brings together logistics, energy and innovation, providing a strong foundation for advancing the electrification of European road freight from Arnhem.

Milence charging hub Zwolle

Partnering to advance the energy transition

For Milence, the transition to electric road freight depends on strong collaboration. Grid operators, governments, transport companies, technology partners and knowledge institutions all play an essential role. In East Netherlands, Milence benefits from extensive expertise and strong regional connections. These close ties support effective collaboration on challenges such as grid capacity, permits and new charging technologies.

At the same time, Milence brings a European perspective to the regional ecosystem. The innovative solutions it develops and the insights it gains here can be applied across its European network. This creates a valuable exchange between regional expertise and international application. Milence aims to connect partners working to make logistics and energy more sustainable and accelerate progress together.

Milence charging hub Zwolle

Zwolle connects East Netherlands to European corridors

Milence opened its second Dutch charging hub at Hessenpoort business park in Zwolle. It is one of 38 charging hubs currently operational across Europe. Located close to the A28 and A50 motorways, the Zwolle hub forms part of the corridor connecting Antwerp and Stockholm. Milence develops its charging hubs along major transport corridors, at strategic locations where freight traffic converges and demand for public charging is high. This approach provides transport companies with reliable charging infrastructure for their daily operations.

Zwolle also plays a role in developing the next generation of charging technology. In 2025, Milence commissioned the Netherlands’ first Megawatt Charging System (MCS) for public charging at this location. The technology enables faster charging for heavy-duty electric trucks. Milence is expanding MCS capacity in Zwolle and gradually rolling out the technology at other strategic locations across Europe.

Milence charging hub Deurningen - Hengelo

Growing further from East Netherlands

Milence continues to invest in East Netherlands. This year, the company opened a charging hub in Deurningen-Hengelo in Overijssel and is building a new hub in Tiel, Gelderland. In this way, the network grows alongside the development of electric road freight and the evolving charging needs of transport companies.

Oost NL helped Milence quickly establish strong regional connections, introducing the company to relevant organisations, businesses and knowledge partners. Oost NL also supported Milence in identifying and securing the location for its charging hub in Zwolle. Oost NL also played a role in selecting the Arnhem location, working in close partnership with Cleantech Park Arnhem, Connectr, the Municipality of Arnhem, the Province of Gelderland and the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA).

For Milence, partnership remains the foundation for further progress. The energy transition depends on businesses, governments and knowledge institutions sharing expertise and developing innovative solutions together. East Netherlands offers Milence a powerful combination of logistics, energy expertise and innovation. Building on this foundation, the company continues to advance charging infrastructure for electric road freight across the Netherlands and Europe.

Milence values Oost NL as a trusted partner in its continued development in the region. Beyond support in finding the right business location, Oost NL plays an important role in building a relevant network and establishing strong connections with regional partners.
