Skytron Europe
Innovative medical pendant systems from Zwolle.

Companies embedded in a (regional) ecosystem benefit from shared expertise, close collaboration, short lines of communication, and a strong entrepreneurial climate. Skytron Europe in Zwolle is a prime example of this synergy in the manufacturing industry.
Skytron Europe - formerly IHB Operations - was acquired in 2009 by the U.S. - based Skytron, one of the world’s top five players in medical equipment such as surgical tables, lights, and pendant systems. From its base in Zwolle, Skytron Europe designs and assembles modular pendant systems that support surgical lighting and medical monitors. These systems empower healthcare professionals with maximum flexibility and efficiency in operating rooms and intensive care units.

With its own engineering department and deep knowledge of mechanical design, Skytron Europe plays a pivotal role within the Skytron group. The expertise from Zwolle not only drives pendant innovations but also contributes to advancements across other Skytron product lines.
Custom solutions and innovation as a key differentiator
Roderik Erens, Operations Director at Skytron Europe: “Skytron Europe stands out through our commitment to tailor-made solutions. Unlike other suppliers that offer standard components, we deliver a wide range of configurations that align with hospitals’ specific needs. This allows for more efficient operating room setups. For instance, we offer multiple arm lengths, whereas others limit themselves to just two or three options.”
Innovation is central to the company’s strategy. The recently developed Freedom Pendant illustrates this focus. The system enhances usability with smart technologies like sensor-controlled braking units and ultra-light rotational components. “Sensor technology prevents collisions between pendant arms and other equipment, helping create a safer, more efficient surgical environment.”
The development of the Freedom Pendant was supported by funding from the Operational Programme East (OP Oost), co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
Excellent accessibility and a strong manufacturing base in this region are vital to us. The proximity of suppliers and partners enables short lines of communication and a highly efficient production chain.
Collaboration with the TechMed Centre
Skytron Europe actively collaborates with knowledge institutions such as the TechMed Centre. Both students and companies benefit from shared facilities at this Centre. Skytron tests its Freedom Pendant here, using a camera system to observe how healthcare professionals interact with it. This partnership yields valuable feedback that helps refine and improve product performance.
An efficient production chain
Erens: “Excellent accessibility and a strong manufacturing base in this region are vital to us. The proximity of suppliers and partners enables short lines of communication and a highly efficient production chain. This agility allows Skytron Europe to quickly respond to the needs of hospitals and medical professionals.”
Hilco Beeks, Project Manager at Oost NL: “Skytron is a key global player in the MedTech industry. Their operations from Zwolle and regional partnerships actively contribute to driving healthcare innovation.”
