Semicon and Integrated Photonics

East Netherlands is a region with a strong concentration of innovative and knowledge intensive SME companies, a high degree of cooperation between the universities and these companies and a close cooperation between the companies themselves. Short lines of communication and an entrepreneurial spirit guarantee a high rate of innovation, crossovers and collaboration. Moreover, these SMEs are often still in Dutch or European hands; an important advantage in the pursuit of more mutual dependencies between the continents in the chip industry.

Nijmegen

Nijmegen, situated in East Netherlands, has evolved into a prominent hub for semiconductor and RF (Radio Frequency) technology, fostering a dynamic ecosystem that attracts global attention. At its core, the semiconductor cluster in Nijmegen is characterized by industry leaders like NXP Semiconductors, renowned for its innovative solutions in automotive and IoT applications. Collaborative efforts extend to institutions such as imec, an international research and development center, where pioneering work is conducted to advance semiconductor technologies. This cluster also features significant players like Ampleon, specializing in RF power, and Nexperia, a key contributor to the semiconductor components landscape.

The RF technology sector in Nijmegen adds another layer of sophistication to the ecosystem. With a focus on radio frequency applications, this cluster is instrumental in shaping advancements in wireless communication, radar systems, and satellite communication. The integration of RF components into semiconductor devices further solidifies Nijmegen’s position as a comprehensive technological hub. The city’s ecosystem thrives on collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and the presence of leading industry players, making Nijmegen an attractive investment destination for companies seeking to capitalize on the rich tapestry of semiconductor and RF technologies.

Companies already based here include CITC, Mini-Circuits and Odyssey.

  • 60+ semiconductor companies active in the region
  • 8,000+ people employed in semiconductor-related activities
  • NXP headquarters employs more than 1,700 staff in Nijmegen
  • Strong in automotive chips (NXP is world leader in automotive semiconductors)
  • RF powerhouse: Ampleon and Nexperia among top global players

ChipTech Twente

Twente has established itself as an international hotspot for analogue chip design, integrated photonics, and quantum technology, as well as an important supplier to ASML’s global supply chain. With a strong Integrated Circuit Design group at the University of Twente, led by world-renowned Professor Bram Nauta, Twente has a long track record of breakthroughs in analogue and mixed-signal ICs.

At the heart of the region’s success lies the MESA+ Institute, one of the largest nanotechnology research institutes in Europe, and a unique ecosystem of around 50 semiconductor-related SMEs. Companies such as LioniX International (integrated photonics), PHIX (packaging), and QuiX Quantum (quantum photonics) bring Dutch expertise to customers worldwide.

What sets Twente apart is the seamless collaboration between industry and academia: the University of Twente and Saxion University of Applied Sciences partner closely with companies, ensuring a continuous flow of knowledge, talent, and spin-offs. Twente’s international scientific reputation in nanotechnology, quantum, photonics, and microfluidics makes it a magnet for high-tech innovation.

Facts & Figures – ChipTech Twente

  • 50+ semiconductor-related companies
  • MESA+ Nanolab: one of Europe’s largest nanotechnology institutes with 500 researchers and 80+ spin-offs
  • Analogue IC design: world-leading research group with multiple IEEE award-winning designs
  • ASML supplier base: Twente firms provide high-precision parts and technologies for ASML’s lithography systems
  • With €133+ million in funding, Twente is powering the future of photonic chip production.

New Origin

New Origin is set to become one of the most advanced photonic chip foundries in Europe, although it is still in development. The company aims to establish a Pure Play Foundry for pilot manufacturing of heterogeneous chips, with ambitions to scale to large-scale production. The first step will be a commercial silicon nitride photonics foundry, expected to be fully operational in 2026.

In the meantime, researchers and companies continue prototyping in the MESA+ Nanolab, ensuring that development and customer engagement don’t have to wait until the new foundry opens.

What makes New Origin particularly promising is its focus on heterogeneous integration. Beyond electronic or photonic chips alone, the future lies in combining technologies: analogue mixed-signal and RF design, photonics, quantum photonics, microfluidics, materials, thin-film applications, and advanced manufacturing. New Origin brings all these capabilities together under one roof.

New Origin also aims to foster a shared facility model, extending capabilities to other foundries and companies, thereby strengthening the entire European photonics ecosystem.

Facts & Figures – New Origin (future outlook)

  • 2026: expected launch of Europe’s first pure-play silicon nitride foundry
  • Positioned to serve global photonics and quantum markets
  • Builds on 20+ years of expertise from MESA+ Nanolab
  • Potential to become a European hub for heterogeneous chip integration
